Among the most popular talismans of the Japanese is the doll of the Buddhist monk named Daruma. It is said to assist in the fulfilment of wishes and is often given away for New Year or on other special occasions.
The historical Daruma was a Buddhist monk also known as Bodhidharma, who meditated allegedly nine years in front of a wall in the mountains without using his arms or legs. Hence a Daruma doll only consists of the human torso, missing arms and legs.
Made of papier-mache and richly decorated the doll is weighted by a weight, which prevents it from tilting over. Therefore the doll is also recognized as a symbol for consistency. When wishing for the fulfilment of their dreams, men paint the left eye first, women the right eye. Then the Daruma is placed at a spot, which they pass by several times a day. Once the wish is fulfilled the second eye will be painted, and the doll will be burned at the local temple.
