Koinobori – Japanese Wind Socks in the Form of Flying Carps

A koinobori (or wind koi) is a kind of wind sock in the form of a colourful koi carp. In Japan, these wind koi will traditionally be hoisted as flags to celebrate Children’s Day (kodomo no hi) on May 5th.

Each wind Koi stands for one special family member: Father (black), mother (red) and one for each child of the family. Until the late 1940's however, May 5th was celebrated as day for boys only and while male children were symbolized by a blue koi, female children were not represented by any koinobori. The Day to celebrate specifically the family’s daughters is March 3 also called hina matsuri in Japanese. Meanwhile, this tradition has changed and today May 5th is the public Japanese holiday to celebrate children of both sexes all together.

Because wind koi are such a lovely sight Japanwelt offers koinobori all year long to celebrate your family and enjoy the visual appearance of colourful carps flying in the sky.
